OVERVIEW

The ISKGA EXPEDITION SKILLS Module

The module introduces essential outdoor skills for effective expedition team members. You will learn to prioritise survival situations and establish efficient campsite routines. Core topics include shelter, fire lighting, cooking, water sourcing and treatment, and developing a practical emergency action plan. The course also includes a detailed session on personal expedition equipment.

Group Dynamics
Develop customer service and group management skills to lead people with different personalities. The aim is to support and motivate all expedition members to work together and achieve shared goals in a positive way.

Shelter & Rescue Strategies
Learn how to create emergency shelters using tarps or natural materials when equipment is damaged or lost. Guides should also understand rescue techniques and have a clear emergency action plan in place.

Fire Skills
Demonstrate the ability to light a fire using different methods and in challenging conditions such as wind and rain, while applying Leave No Trace principles when dismantling fires and camps.

Hygiene
Prepare and handle food in a hygienic way, including food foraged from the coastal environment, while following proper food safety practices.

Packing a Kayak & Group Equipment
Learn how to pack a sea kayak efficiently, ensuring proper trim for safe handling. Guides should be able to demonstrate packing systems and manage equipment for multi-day group expeditions.

Camp Selection
Understand how to choose safe and suitable campsites by considering weather, shelter, group size, environmental impact, local regulations, and risk management.

Trip Planning
Plan multi-day expeditions that balance group needs and environmental conditions. This includes route planning, resupply strategies, and emergency evacuation procedures.

Equipment
Organise both personal and group expedition equipment, ensuring the group carries appropriate safety gear, spare food, and emergency shelter for client-based trips.

Provisioning & Foraging
Have a basic knowledge of wild foods that can be found along an expedition to supplement provisions, and understand safe methods for obtaining potable water. Guides should be familiar with local food sources and be able to ensure adequate nutrition, especially in emergency situations.

Wildlife & Ecology
Demonstrate an understanding of the local geology, ecology, and wildlife in the operating area. Guides should follow established wildlife guidelines, minimizing disturbance while promoting respectful coexistence between clients and the natural environment.
